    Cipro toxicity symptoms

Why did it feel as if a bomb had exploded within my body and mind? Why did I go from doing Cross Fit to being unable to walk a block? Why did I suddenly lose my energy, endurance and flexibility? I had suffered from an adverse reaction to ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and I had gone through fluoroquinolone toxicity syndrome—a multi-symptom, “mysterious” illness that involves damage to connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, cartilage, fascia, etc.) throughout the body, damage to the nervous systems (central, peripheral and autonomic), and more. Why did I lose my memory and reading comprehension? Even though I knew why I was sick, I was still left wondering, what does fluoroquinolone toxicity mean? No doctors that I consulted were able to give me any answers to those questions, so I went digging around myself. How do fluoroquinolones damage tendons, muscles, cartilage and nerves? Here are some hypotheses for the mechanisms by which fluoroquinolones cause nervous system and musculoskeletal damage that manifests as multi-symptom, often chronic, illness. Is fluoroquinolone toxicity syndrome a result of mitochondrial damage? This hypothesis has the most evidence to support it. The FDA noted, in their April 27, 2013 Pharmacovigilance Review, “Disabling Peripheral Neuropathy Associated with Systemic Fluoroquinolone Exposure,” that: “Ciprofloxacin has been found to affect mammalian topoisomerase II, especially in mitochondria. prednisolone for dogs dosage The fluoroquinolone antibiotics are important drugs indeed – ciprofloxacin is probably the most famous of the bunch, but there’s a whole series of them, and they’re widely used for serious bacterial infections. (I last wrote about them here, with the various arguments about how they were developed in the first place). But for many years now, it’s been increasingly clear that this class of drugs can have some very unwelcome effects in some patients. The most prominent of these is tendon damage, which often showing up as problems with the Achilles tendon, up to outright rupture even months after drug treatment. Other muscle and connective tissue effects have been seen, as well as CNS effects and others. Over the years, the drugs have picked up black-box warnings for these effects, which seems entirely appropriate. Any theory has to take into account the fact that the great majority of patients seem tolerate the drugs pretty well, but that suggests that a better knowledge of the mechanism might let you pick out which people shouldn’t take them in the first place. This article at is a good summary of current research in the area.

A healthcare professional should be consulted before taking any drug, changing any diet or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment. 95% of prescription drugs on the market today have transient side effects, meaning their side effects cease once the drug is stopped. Often times Cipro's most devastating side effects don't even surface until after you've completed your entire course, and they then persist for months, years or in some cases forever! Cipro is a purely synthetic chemotherapeutic antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone (also called "quinolone" or just "quin") class of drugs. The side effects listed on Cipro's warning label (plus many others that aren't) can be PERMANENT and result in lifelong disability!!! Bayer blatantly hides this fact, as the word "permanent" appears absolutely NOWHERE on Cipro's warning label!!! Over HALF of all fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been pulled from the market for their horrific safety records. And the ones that remain on the market (Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox and a few others) are no safer! A study of ADRs in Italy, published in 2005, found that among more than 50 types of drugs, fluoroquinolones were involved in the largest number of serious problems and accounted for 11 percent of all adverse events.1 Every single drug in this class carries a black box warning--the equivalent of a skull & crossbones--for its nasty side effects. A black box warning is the last step before taking a drug completely off the market. There is NO SUCH THING as a safe fluoroquinolone antibiotic! The risk of experiencing an adverse reaction to Cipro (including, but certainly not limited to tendon rupture) is MUCH higher than the warning label would have you believe.

  6. I was curious how you are, and how you are feeling after Cipro. I had only one pill of Cipro, and had painful legs and vision disturbances. Have you symptoms improved at all? I am hoping that 1 or 2 pills of Cipro would indicate a temporary effect or just the effects from magnesium depletion, and not serious side effects.

It is also used for liver cirrhosis, kidney impairment, nephrotic syndrome, in adjunct therapy for swelling of the brain or lungs where rapid diuresis is required (IV injection), and in the management of severe hypercalcemia in combination with adequate rehydration. Furosemide also can lead to gout caused by hyperuricemia. The tendency, as for all loop diuretics, to cause low serum potassium concentration (hypokalemia) has given rise to combination products, either with potassium or with the potassium-sparing diuretic amiloride (Co-amilofruse). Other electrolyte abnormalities that can result from furosemide use include hyponatremia, hypochloremia, hypomagnesemia, and hypocalcemia. Furosemide, like other loop diuretics, acts by inhibiting the luminal Na-K-Cl cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, by binding to the chloride transport channel, thus causing sodium, chloride, and potassium loss in urine. The action on the distal tubules is independent of any inhibitory effect on carbonic anhydrase or aldosterone; it also abolishes the corticomedullary osmotic gradient and blocks negative, as well as positive, free water clearance. Because of the large Na Cl absorptive capacity of the loop of Henle, diuresis is not limited by development of acidosis, as it is with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Additionally, furosemide is a noncompetitive subtype-specific blocker of GABA-A receptors. Some of the brand names under which furosemide is marketed include: Aisemide, Apo-Furosemide, Beronald, Desdemin, Discoid, Diural, Diurapid, Dryptal, Durafurid, Edemid, Errolon, Eutensin, Flusapex, Frudix, Frusetic, Frusid, Fulsix, Fuluvamide, Furesis, Furix, Furo-Puren, Furon, Furosedon, Fusid.frusone, Hydro-rapid, Impugan, Katlex, Lasilix, Lasix, Lodix, Lowpston, Macasirool, Mirfat, Nicorol, Odemase, Oedemex, Profemin, Rosemide, Rusyde, Salix, Seguril, Teva-Furosemide, Trofurit, Uremide, and Urex. In addition to an ABC News producer’s 7-month-old son who has developed the skin form of anthrax after visiting his mother’s workplace, other children may also have been exposed to lethal spores at another media outlet — American Media Inc. Employees of the supermarket-tabloid publishing company were encouraged to bring their kids to the office with them, since many of the chain’s reporters, editors and photographers worked long hours. “Cipro hasn’t traditionally been given to kids under 21,” said Dr. Doctors have prescribed AMI’s more than 300 employees there Ciprofloxacin, the drug of choice to combat anthrax, as a prophylactic in case they’ve been exposed to the disease. George Miceli, chief of emergency medicine at Boca Raton Community Hospital, which has tested and treated AMI employees exposed to anthrax. The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “only recently recommended it” as a first line of defense against anthrax for kids, as well as adults, he said. Cipro, as a broad-spectrum antibiotic which can kill a lot of bugs, can cause liver damage, severe diarrhea and even miscarriages. FDA guidelines for treating anthrax with Cipro call for patients to take one 500-mg tablet or liquid suspension twice a day for 60 days. The unusually long period of treatment is due to anthrax spores’ ability to survive up to two months. With that in mind, pediatricians are prescribing a milder antibiotic — amoxicillin — as an alternative, albeit effective, drug for kids exposed to anthrax, Miceli said. In fact, there’s been a run on the drug at pharmacies in the Boca Raton area since the anthrax outbreak there, he says, although no children there have tested positive for anthrax.
